DDU-GKY is uniquely focused on rural youth between the ages of 15 and 35 years from poor families. As a part of the skill India campaign, it plays an instrumental role in supporting the social and economic programs of the Government like Make in India, Digital India, Smart Cities and Start-Up India, Stand-Up India campaigns. Over 180 million or 69% of the country's youth population between the ages of 18 and 34 years, live in its rural areas. Of these, the bottom of the pyramid youth from poor families with no or marginal employment number about 55 million.
The overall project period is 36 months from the date of signing of the agreement and fund release from SRLM. The target geography for this project is Thiruvanamalai, Vellore, Coimbatore, Ramnad, Krishnagiri, Karur, Kanyakumari, Erode, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Trichy. A skill training centre has been set up as per SOP in Alapakkam Chennai. The classrooms are designed for effective learning and interaction between trainers and trainees. The IT lab has 35 computers with individual internet access in all computers. Alayam Welfare Trust has all the laboratories with the latest equipments.The centre also has hostel with all facilities for a safe and comfortable stay. There is a roof-top garden in the terrace which gives the students a feel of being with nature and help them in mental relaxation.
